Chernow’s biography gives Hamilton his due and sets the record straight, deftly illustrating that the political and economic greatness of today’s America is the result of Hamilton’s countless sacrifices to champion ideas that were often wildly disputed during his time. “A robust full-length portrait, in my view the best ever written, of the most brilliant, charismatic and dangerous founder of them all." -Joseph Ellisįew figures in American history have been more hotly debated or more grossly misunderstood than Alexander Hamilton. NOTE: I have chosen to use the pronoun he/him/his for RuPaul. While this book is a quick read, because it’s relatively inexpensive and so beautiful to look at, I do think it is worth the buy if you are a fan of RuPaul and know what you are getting. It’s filled with beautiful full color photographs of Ru in perfect drag, perfect outfits, in perfect lighting with little snippets of wisdom sprinkled on top. If like me you also like Ru and the costumes, then you will probably like this book. I discovered this show a few seasons back and have been enjoying it’s cheeky content ever since. If you don’t know who RuPaul is, he’s an American drag multi-super talent who hosts and produces RuPaul’s Drag Race, amongst many other projects. GuRu is RuPaul’s third book in the memoir genre, but this is the first of his that I’ve read. Gregory was the obvious choice to succeed Pope Pelagius. Some, having fled from the infected cities, escaped themselves, but imparted the disease to the healthy ( Church History, IV.29). The ways in which the disease was communicated, were various and unaccountable: for some perished by merely living with the infected, others by only touching them, others by having entered their chamber, others by frequenting public places. His account is eerily similar to the pandemic we now face: And the plague had just taken the life of Pope Pelagius II in February of 590.Įvagrius Scholasticus, a church historian who died that year in Antioch, lost most of his family to the plague, which had spread throughout the empire. The Roman Empire in the West had fallen, the infrastructure of Rome lay in ruins, the Tiber was constantly flooding, and famine and the bubonic plague were decimating a population already in steep decline. Gregory the Great was indisputably amongst the greatest popes to lead the Church (AD 590-604), and he did so as his world was crumbling around him.
We’re paired up on a yearlong school project, but I’m confident I can resist her. It was so very easy to read and I didn’t want to put it down. #famous is funny, clever, and simply downright addictive. And what I got instead was complete awesomeness. For some reason I thought this book might be a little cliché or done before, maybe a teen-y kind of book with two dimensional characters. I anticipated that #famous would be a fun book, I just never expected that I would enjoy it as much as I did. #famous #awesome #funnybookyoumustread #touchingaddictive #ICouldWriteThisWholeReviewInHashtags Told in alternating points of view, #famous captures the out-of-control thrill ride of falling for someone in front of everyone. What is it about the magic of theatre that makes our hearts race? When are we so immersed in the show that we lose track of time? Do we all shed a tear at the same moment, and do we collectively hold our breath? Revealing the magic – a pioneering research project begins at Bristol Old Vic in a first of its kind. But I couldn't get to it because it was frontier territory for my country and as forbidden as the Berlin Wall. After all, I reasoned, surely an island should be a place that can only be reached by ship? Like the island's lighthouse on a tiny rocky outcrop near the coast. Two bridges chained it to the mainland – and to my romantic, girlish mind, it didn't feel like a proper island. I spent my childhood holidays on the shores of the Baltic with my grandparents, who lived on the island of Usedom. My domain ended at the shores of the Baltic Sea, with seemingly insurmountable barriers separating me from the outside world. I realised for the first time how small my country was when compared with the rest of the world. Then I tried to find my home – the German Democratic Republic. The first time I did this was after watching a television documentary on the Galapagos Islands. I was desperate to travel when I was a girl, but the only way I could escape was through the pages of my atlas. Before the wall fell, living here meant most of the world was out of reach. O pening an atlas at a random page or spinning the globe and picking out a destination with eyes closed – who hasn't done that? I grew up in East Germany – on the wrong side of the Berlin Wall. And so Long-Term Capital Management was born. John Meriwether, a famously successful Wall Street trader, spent the 1980s as a partner at Salomon Brothers, establishing the best-and the brainiest-bond arbitrage group in the world. They are of a horny texture, not unlike dry parchment, and do not readily decay. Translated by BERNARD MIALL SOCIAL LIFE IN THE INSECT WORLD. For some months yet and even during the winter you will often find these forsaken skins hanging from the twigs in the precise attitude assumed by the larva at the moment of metamorphosis. The empty shell remains, intact except for the fissure in the back clasping the twig so firmly that the winds of autumn do not always succeed in detaching it. Fastening upon its chosen twig at nine o'clock in the morning, the Cigale flies away under my eyes at half-past twelve. Finally, the brown colour appears and rapidly covers the whole body the change of colour is completed in half an hour. Hanging to its deserted shell by the two fore limbs, the Cigale sways to the least breath of air, still feeble and still green. Some two hours pass without any perceptible change. I’ve read the previous 5 and loved this series so much because, unlike a lot of the dark stuff I read, this is filled with good people and good intentions and hope. This review is more for me than for you, because unless you have the earlier books you won’t follow this one. I was sooo excited to finally see Book 6 in the fantastic Breakthrough series. |
